Love this sight. I have been looking for any info on the 818th Tank Destroyer Battalion for several years and finally found this sight. Would love to see some more pics of any of the men in Company A in which my dad, Staff Sergeant Nolan H. McKibbon served. You men are to be admired and respected for all the sacrifices you made. Thanks and I will add this sight to my favorites.

Before my dad passed away he kept in touch with many in the TDB. As a child, my twin brother and I attended many reunions - every summer! I am very sorry that at ten years old or so, the location of the pool was more important than listening to all the stories. Now it is too late. I would love to know more about the 818th from the beginning to the end. By the way, I am now 40, married with two kids. I wish my wife and children would have had the opportunity to meet Papa. Many of you probably attended a reunion here, on our farm in August of 1982, anyone remember? This is a wonderful web-site, and I would love to hear from anyone.

Comments: I am very impressed with this website, great job. My pop was a driver, duce and a half with the 3 inch naval gun in tow,he has many stories but at 87 years old some details are forgotten, I know my mom said he turned down 3 purple hearts because he thought others deserve them more. recently my dad and I attended a wake for a special friend of mine who was a Marine in the Pacific. the eulogy was very moving. I am so proud of pop. I hope he lives for ever. but alas our vets are paying the final price of glory. I wish all the veterans godspeed. I will never forget your dedication. Comments: WONDERFUL SITE!!
My grandfather, Harry M. Bly, was an M-10 TDCommander in Co. A of the 893rd. He served in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland , Ardennes and Germany campaigns. Unfortunately, He passed in April of 2002, leaving so much information locked inside of him. He rarely would speak of what happened during the war until shortly before his death. And then, it was hard to follow since he had Alzheimers and stories tended to jump around. I listened as much as I could, trying to learn so much about him and our nations heroes. All those men were truly a rare breed and all are missed. Anyone out there with information or who knew him, please feel free to contact me. I have some of his photo albulms with some amazing photos and would be happy to share them. One particulary is of the men on that tank.. A. Bell, Malden MA ; J. Polock,OH? ; George Edwards, Cleveland OH ;, Michael Haschak, Robins,OH?, Harry Bly, Strasburg,VA ;

The Knoxville reunion was fantastic. Tennessee is a beautiful state and I enjoyed meeting new and old friends, especially those from C Company. The reunion was very meaningful for my family this year because our children were able to attend and know more about their grandfather, R.G.(Gail) (Alec) Alexander, who died in 1966. Stopped by to check out the photo's from Yankton. They look great! Again, the Goeden's put on a fabulous reunion. Just a thought, Sharon you were right, it was worth seven bucks (lottery ticket). I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of the folks who made my first reunion experience a great one. I know, I had a great time and my daughter Sydnie had fun as well. Robert you are doing a fantastic job with this website. All of the time and effort, you put into this is well received. I am looking forward to driving down to Tennesee. I also want to send a "hi" out to Dennis Langland. I hope that room you have is still open for a possible fishing trip. Thanks again for the excellent time and wonderful website.

I am 29 years old and my Grandfather was a member of the 818 TD. I have heard stories about his years in the service, all of his "brothers" in the service, and the reunions that he and my Grandmother have attended. He is 84 years old, and I can sit for hours listening to his stories and looking at all of his memrobilia. I found this web site and I am printing off some of this information and I plan on suprising him with it. I am a firefighter in Boaz and since September 11, 2001 I have gained a greater respect for all of the men and women who have served in the armed forces.

Comments:My dad was not a TD man; he was a regular foot soldier in the 84th Infantry. However, the following is an account he gave about a TD unit in the Battle of the Bulge: "At one point, near the town of Marché, we were stationed in the town of Vervieles [Verdenne?]. We were told to hold this at all costs. This was apparently a critical point on the Allied line. The commander of a tank destroyer unit (four tank destroyers) told Lieutenant Rost that the buildings all around were mined and that if we could not hold the Germans back, the tank destroyers would cover for us, and that we were to pull back and that they would blow the buildings down around the tanks. That would, of course, make a virtually impassible blockage in the road, but it would also be the end of the lives of those men in the tank destroyers. I have very rarely seen that sort of courage."
God bless the USA.

I need help finding info on him & his station as he never discussed it. His pictures confirm him being in the 3rd Army & in the 818th Tank Destroyers in France & at a reunion & that he received the Silver Cross, but any more than that, I don't know. Any help would be graciously appreciated.

There is a soldier...
whether a private or a general officer, he is a soldier.
His feelings, actions, and mannerisms are of
such a variety that when blended together,
they reflect the face of America.
A definitive picture of the soldier is impossible.
There is no rank, no race, no religion.
A soldier is one who has contributed his
mind and body to the service of his country.
For all the people, whether civilians or in the armed
forces, who have fought for this country,
let us say a prayer.
This Memorial Day,
let us not forget all the brave men and women,
who have died for us.
Do not forget September 11, 2001.
Keep the candle burning.

Thanks for your wonderful site. I have searched the web several times over the past couple of years and found nothing on the 818th until this. My Dad, Richard Gail Alexander was in the 818th from its organization until the end of the war. I believe he was a Staff Sgt. in one of the gun companies. Mom, who followed him prior to the unit shipping out, remembers most of the posts. I was at a couple of them myself as an infant (born 7-6-43). Dad died in 1966 after retireing from the Army as a 1st Sgt. My mother, sister and I plan to be in Yankton. If anyone knew, or has iny info on, Sgt. Richard Gail (Alec) Alexander, please, please, please contact me! address, 921 W. 6th St, Idalou, Texas 79329; home phone 806/892-2323; cell phone 806/441-4036

Comments:Everyone should know the amount of work Robert Bowles has done to provide the information on the 818th.
I searched for quite some time on the internet. There wasn't much available. Generally, I would find 'lines of mention', deep inside of text.
Links and information were traded between Mr. Bowles and myself. The amount of knowledge and research was outstanding. He saved me so much time in my search.
I don't know Mr. Bowles, other than through emails, but the passion in his work is very apparent. I want to personally praise and thank Mr. Bowles for what he has done to preserve the memory of the 818th.
